Resume Writing Service

www.JobsByFax.com
4 star

The premise is simple: compile a list from their huge database of companies, and JobsByFax will fax your resume and cover letter to those companies for pennies per. There's a certain draw to simplicity.

But in the hunt for a job, does simple deliver? Short answer: it depends.

Here's How It Works

1.

Select the type of employers and the locality you want to fax your resume to. You'll have the option to review and edit the exact list.

2. Upload your resume and cover letter, and fill in contact information. You will then get the exact price to fax your resume. (see pricing details in the sidebar).
3. Pay using a credit card, and your resume and cover letter are on their way.

Here's What We Like

They're above board and honest in two respects: the results you achieve largely depends on the quality of your resume and cover letter, and it's an odds game. Meaning, the more you send out, the more phone calls your project will generate. They explain this pretty well under the heading "There must be a catch, right?" located on their home page.
Huge database. They claim to have a database of more than 3 million employers, updated every 6 months. Of course, you're not going to be sending your resume out to 3 million employers. But the larger the database, the more likely to find a collection of employers to your liking.
Set up a "Do Not Fax To" list so your current employer doesn't get your resume.
Excellent rating with the Better Business Bureau (see sidebar).

Here's What We Don't Like

They guarantee results, but the details are uninspiring. The company guarantees at least 10 employers calling you to interview -- if you send a properly written cover letter and resume to at least 1,000+ or more employers. OK, that's not unreasonable. But if you don't get those 10 phone calls and look to the company to deliver on their guarantee, the best they'll do is evaluate your resume and cover letter at no charge, and then offer to send them out to another 1000+ companies -- at half price.

On the first point, I see no evidence that they have the necessary credentials to be evaluating resumes, and on the second point, this reeks of a gimmick to keep selling their services.

That said, I suppose it's a better guarantee than absolutely nothing.

The whole FAX industry is on the way out. Ten or twenty years ago, FAX machines were in much more widespread use -- often positioned in the executive suites of major corporations. Back then, faxing your resume was a cutting edge technique to bypass the company mailroom and shoot your credentials right out in front of your prospective boss.

Today, these machines are more likely to be relegated to just a few departments or centralized in an enterprise printing operation. Meaning, the likelihood is great that your fax will not be seen by the intended recipient.

JobsByFax.com Review - The Wrap Up

At it's most basic, the company has a good idea. If you like the thought of faxing your resume to companies as part of your active job search, they can save you some time. Pricing is reasonable on a per-fax basis, but keep in mind that you'll need to send out a boatload to take advantage of the odds game. And a boatload starts to add up.

More troubling is the overarching trend in the use of fax machines in general. That trend is down. Sure, there are still fax machines in companies. But if you're an IT professional, for example, and you're faxing out your resume, I think you'll have an uphill climb trying to appear cutting edge to the companies in question.

That said, some career types may still see some benefits from this method of operations. Clerical and blue collar jobs in particular. Or indeed, jobs at smaller companies or lower-tech companies might be receptive to faxed resumes (for example, applying for a sales job at a company that still receives sales orders via fax).

So, given fairly strict occupational parameters and understanding that this is an odds game, and that the quality of your resume and cover letter is paramount, some job seekers may get some benefit.

The company does devote a page to resume and cover letter tips. These are very general tips and should be taken with a grain of salt.
